About the Hayward MaxFlo VS 500
Hayward's MaxFlo VS 500 owner's manual (IS23520VSP Rev-D) lists one model, SP23520VSP, with one parts list. The motor and drive are sold together as a power end assembly (SPX2303Z1VSPE), which includes the diffuser screws through the motor bolts (parts 7 to 14).
Two strainer cover kits are listed: the standard kit and one for biguanide sanitizers, which Hayward marks as not pressure testable. The shaft seal listed for this model is the Viton seal assembly SPX2700SAV.
Common problems and the parts involved
Pump won't prime
Hayward's first checks: the strainer housing is full of water, the cover o-ring is clean, seated and lubricated, the cover is locked, and the baskets are clean. Suction-side air leaks show as bubbles at the return fittings.
Parts: Strainer cover kit (includes strainer cover, lock-ring, o-ring), Strainer cover o-ring, Strainer basket. Troubleshoot this
Motor hums but doesn't start
Hayward names an impeller jammed with debris, and says to have a qualified repair professional open the pump.
Parts: Impeller. Troubleshoot this
Low flow
Hayward lists a clogged strainer or suction line, undersized piping, a dirty filter or partly closed valve, a suction air leak, and a plugged or damaged impeller, replaced together with a new seal assembly.
Parts: Strainer basket, Impeller, Shaft seal assembly, Viton. Troubleshoot this
Noisy pump
Hayward lists suction air leaks and cavitation, vibration from poor mounting, debris in the housing, and worn motor bearings, often after a seal leak lets water reach them.
Parts: Pump strainer housing with drain plugs, Impeller, Shaft seal assembly, Viton. Troubleshoot this
'Check System' drive overload or pump failed to start
Hayward says to check the impeller, diffuser, shaft seal and motor for any issues or binding. Errors such as motor phase lost, processor failed or memory failed indicate the motor/drive may need replacing; Hayward says to contact its technical service.
Parts: Diffuser, Impeller, Shaft seal assembly, Viton, Power end assembly (includes parts 7-14, motor and drive). Troubleshoot this
Repair or replace?
Most of these parts are replaceable on their own, which is why it matters which one has actually failed before anything is ordered. Whether a repair or a new pump makes more sense depends on what failed and the condition of the rest of the pump.
