About the Hayward Perflex Extended Cycle (EC50)
Hayward's Perflex owner's manual (ISEC50C90 Rev E) covers the EC50AC and EC50C series systems: a Perflex D.E. filter and a Hayward pool pump mounted together on a molded base, rated by Hayward at 3,000 gallons per hour.
The filter uses Flex-Tubes and a 'bump' handle that regenerates the D.E. coating so the filter cycle is extended, and lets the used D.E. be drained without backwashing.
The manual prints two parts lists, one for filters with a plastic-type clamp and one for filters with a metal-type clamp. They differ only in the clamp assembly (ref 4) and the clamp hardware (ref 9).
Common problems and the parts involved
Running at high pressures
Hayward's causes and remedies: D.E. coated with normal pool dirt or algae (bump the filter), too much D.E. (bump, drain and recharge), a small eyeball fitting restricting the return line (change to a larger fitting), or a partly closed return valve (open it). The operating section says to regenerate when pressure rises 7-10 psi above the precoat pressure.
Parts: Flex-Tube assembly (set of 10). Troubleshoot this
Drop off of return flow
Hayward's causes: D.E. loaded with pool dirt (bump), a clogged pump strainer or skimmer basket (clean), clogged pump impeller vanes, an air leak on the suction side of the pump (check the cover gasket, hand knobs, hose and clamps), or the motor running under speed (see the pump and motor troubleshooting guide; Hayward notes most motor problems come from undersized or improper wiring or power cut-backs).

Short cycles
Hayward's causes: D.E. loaded to capacity (bump, drain and recharge), bumping incorrectly (slow down stroke, brisk upstroke, six times), a bent bump handle (straighten or replace), pump output above the filter's design flow rate (regulate the pump to the filter's rating), or algae (super-chlorinate, then bump, drain and recharge as needed).
Parts: Bump handle.
Short cycles even after proper bumping, draining and recharging
Hayward's cause: clogged Flex-Tube braids from chemical deposits, running a D.E. charge too long with live algae, or running the filter without D.E. (including testing new plumbing without D.E.). Remedy: clean the tube nest with a detergent soak or a chemical (muriatic acid or filter cleaner) cleaning.
Parts: Flex-Tube assembly (set of 10).
Repair or replace?
Most of these parts are replaceable on their own, which is why it matters which one has actually failed before anything is ordered. Whether a repair or a new pump makes more sense depends on what failed and the condition of the rest of the pump. Pool Filter Repair & Installation · Pool Equipment Replacement & Upgrades
