About the Hayward PowerFlo Matrix
Hayward's PowerFlo Matrix owner's manual (ISSP1591 Rev H) describes the pump as engineered for above-ground pools. Its parts listing has one column of part numbers for the whole series rather than one per model.
The parts that differ are the motors: Hayward lists single speed motors from 3/4 HP to 2-1/2 HP and two speed motors at 1 HP and 1-1/2 HP, all with a switch. The impeller has no listed number; Hayward says to refer to the part number on the original equipment.
Common problems and the parts involved
Pump won't prime
Hayward's first checks: the strainer housing is full of water, the cover o-ring is clean, seated and lubricated, the cover is locked, all valves are open and the pool water level is right.
Parts: Strainer cover with lock ring and o-ring, Strainer cover o-ring, Strainer basket. Troubleshoot this
Motor hums but doesn't start
Hayward's checks for this pump are a centrifugal switch stuck open and a binding motor shaft.
Parts: Motor, 3/4 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1-1/2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 2-1/2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1 HP two speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1-1/2 HP two speed, with switch (Flex-48). Troubleshoot this
Motor shuts off and restarts
The motor's automatic thermal overload protector cuts it when it overheats. Hayward points at undersized wiring, loose connections, low voltage (often from an extension cord), and mechanical binding.
Parts: Motor, 3/4 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1-1/2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 2-1/2 HP single speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1 HP two speed, with switch (Flex-48), Motor, 1-1/2 HP two speed, with switch (Flex-48). Troubleshoot this
Noisy pump
Hayward lists suction air leaks and cavitation, vibration from poor mounting, debris in the housing, worn motor bearings often from a seal leak, and a vibrating equipment base.
Parts: Shaft seal assembly, Pump housing. Troubleshoot this
Repair or replace?
Most of these parts are replaceable on their own, which is why it matters which one has actually failed before anything is ordered. Whether a repair or a new pump makes more sense depends on what failed and the condition of the rest of the pump. Pool Pump Repair & Installation · Pool Equipment Replacement & Upgrades
