About the Hayward PowerFlo LX / PowerFlo II / EP Series
Hayward's ISPFSERIES owner's manual (Rev H) covers the PowerFlo LX, PowerFlo II and EP series in one parts listing with three columns: SP1540C; SP1580, SP1580X15, SW1585X20, SW1585X25 and EP1550LX; and SP1750, SP1775 and SP1780.
Most parts are shared. The housing cover, pump housing and strainer basket differ by column, and the motor differs by model. Hayward says the PowerFlo LX and EP series must be installed below the pool water line, while the self-priming PowerFlo II may be installed up to four feet above it.
The impeller has no listed number; Hayward says to refer to the part number on the original equipment.
Common problems and the parts involved
Pump won't prime
Hayward's first checks: the strainer housing is full of water, the cover o-ring is clean, seated and lubricated, the cover is locked, all valves are open, the pool water level is right and the skimmer weir is not stuck.
Parts: Strainer basket, Strainer cover o-ring, Strainer cover with o-ring. Troubleshoot this
Motor hums but doesn't start
Hayward's checks for these pumps are a centrifugal switch stuck open and a binding motor shaft.
Parts: Motor. Troubleshoot this
Motor shuts off and restarts
The motor's thermal overload protector is doing its job. Hayward points at undersized wiring, loose connections, low voltage (often from an extension cord) and mechanical binding.
Parts: Motor. Troubleshoot this
Noisy pump
Hayward lists suction air leaks and cavitation, vibration from poor mounting, debris in the housing, worn motor bearings often from a seal leak, and a vibrating equipment base.
Parts: Seal assembly, Pump housing, Motor. Troubleshoot this
Repair or replace?
Most of these parts are replaceable on their own, which is why it matters which one has actually failed before anything is ordered. Whether a repair or a new pump makes more sense depends on what failed and the condition of the rest of the pump. Pool Pump Repair & Installation · Pool Equipment Replacement & Upgrades
