About the Hayward TriStar
Hayward's TriStar owner's manual (IS3200 Rev. M) has one parts listing for the whole series and a Pump SKU Detail table that gives the motor, power end and impeller for each model number: full rate, max rate and 50 Hz pumps.
Most parts are shared across every model. The impeller, the motor and the power end assembly are where models differ, so match the model number on your pump's label before ordering. Hayward's power end assembly includes parts #7-18 and the motor.
Two strainer cover kits are listed: the standard kit and one for biguanide sanitizer applications only, which is not pressure testable.
Common problems and the parts involved
Pump won't prime
Hayward's first checks: the strainer housing is full of water, the cover o-ring is clean, seated and lubricated, the cover is locked, and the baskets are clean. Suction-side air leaks show as bubbles at the return fittings. Hayward says to replace the shaft seal only if it is leaking.
Parts: Strainer cover kit, Strainer cover o-ring, Strainer basket, Shaft seal assembly. Troubleshoot this
Motor hums but doesn't start
Hayward names an impeller jammed with debris, and says to have a qualified repair professional open the pump. Switch the pump off at the breaker rather than letting it hum.
Parts: Impeller with impeller screw, Motor. Troubleshoot this
Low flow
Hayward lists a clogged strainer or suction line, undersized piping, a dirty filter or partly closed valve, a suction air leak, and a plugged or damaged impeller, which is replaced together with a new seal assembly.
Parts: Strainer basket, Impeller with impeller screw, Shaft seal assembly. Troubleshoot this
Noisy pump
Hayward lists suction air leaks and cavitation, vibration from poor mounting, debris in the housing, and worn motor bearings, often from a seal leak; seal leaks should be fixed at once.
Parts: Impeller with impeller screw, Shaft seal assembly, Motor. Troubleshoot this
Motor shuts off
Hayward points first at low voltage or a power drop at the motor, often from undersized wiring, which a qualified professional should check.
Parts: Motor. Troubleshoot this
Motor won't start
Hayward's checks are the wiring against the data plate, the supply voltage, loose connections, open switches or relays, tripped breakers or blown fuses, and whether the motor shaft turns freely.
Parts: Motor. Troubleshoot this
Repair or replace?
Most of these parts are replaceable on their own, which is why it matters which one has actually failed before anything is ordered. Whether a repair or a new pump makes more sense depends on what failed and the condition of the rest of the pump. Pool Pump Repair & Installation · Pool Equipment Replacement & Upgrades
